Photographic Workshop in Mathare Slum, Nairobi

Slum’s Insiders is a photographic workshop oriented to the exploration, experience and visual narration of urban, social and human territory of Mathare slums in Nairobi. Participants will work individually, side by side with young inhabitants, guides and translators, as well as slum’s active subjects, daily sharing the making up of the visual narration. We believe in the workshop participating formula, able to reproduce the complexity of the place , first of all by listening and observing those who live in the place itself. We will analyse the typical stereotypes which are usually used to describe slums in the world, looking, on the contrary, for new points of view and a more authentic understandig. An intense editing of all images will be shared by the group at the end
of each day.

The workshop will be concluded by a public and itinerant projection inside the slum, where each participant will find the opportunuty to reach a practical aim and present his work to the community.

A good knowledge of the English language is required. Each participant will use his own photo/video equipment.

Subscription: 600 euros, included overnight stay, local transport and guide, not included flight and meals.

The workshop’s subscriptions will contribute to a coming web platfom project for young artists and concerned self orginized active groups from Mathare.

Workshop di fotografia nello slum di Mathare, Nairobi

Slum’s Insiders_Mathare è un workshop di fotografia documentaria orientato all'esplorazione, l'esperienza ed il racconto visivo del territorio urbano, sociale e umano della baraccopoli di Mathare a Nairobi.

I partecipanti lavoreranno singolarmente, fianco a fianco a giovani abitanti, guide e traduttori, ma soprattutto soggetti attivi dello slum, con cui condividere quotidianamente la costruzione del racconto fotografico.

Crediamo in una formula partecipativa del workshop capace d restituire la complessità di un luogo prima di tutto attraverso l’ascolto e l’osservazione di chi vive il luogo stesso. Analizzeremo i clichè tipici con cui sono rappresentate le bidonville nel mondo, alla ricerca di nuovi spunti narrativi e verso una comprensione più autentica dello slum. Alla fine di ogni giornata verrà condiviso in gruppo un editing serrato delle immagini.

Il workshop si concluderà con una proiezione pubblica all’interno dello slum, dove ogni partecipante avrà l'occasione di finalizzare il proprio lavoro e presentarlo alla comunità.

Si richiede una buona conoscenza della lingua inglese.

Ogni partecipante utilizzerà la propria apparecchiatura fotografica e/o video.

Iscrizioni aperte fino al 30 Aprile 2012 (max.14 partecipanti).
Quota di partecipazione : 600 € (compreso di alloggio, trasporti in loco e guida _ escluso volo aereo e vitto).
Le quote di partecipazioni contribuiranno alla creazione di un progetto web da e per i giovani artisti e i gruppi autorganizzati e socialmente attivi di Mathare

Francesco Giusti: Freelance documentary photographer oriented toward investigation of social realities, communities and identity related issues.In the last years he has worked on migrants and asylum seekers issues in Europe and the Mediterrenean Sea. In 2006 he published the book “Hotel Industria” and the volume “Ex Fabrica – Identities and mutations on the border of the metropolis”; about former industrial areas on the north of Italy, inhabited and transformed in shelters by illegal immigrants. He has worked in the slums of Nairobi, Cairo and Port Au Prince; part of a long on-going project about metropolis and informal settlements communities. He has photographed in Haiti, Kenia, in the Sub-Sahara area of Western Africa, in Congo and Colombia, among other places. His project "Sapologie" won the 2nd Place Prize for Arts and Entertainment Stories at the 2009 World Press Photo Awards. He has recently worked in Egypt and Tunisia during the 2011 arab uprisings. His works are published on the international press and exhibited in galleries and photographic festivals.

Filippo Romano, born in 1968, is a documentary and architecture photographer. He studied photo documentary at the full time program at the International Center of photography (I.C.P.). in New York. His photograhic projects are mostly about cities and urban dwellers. He currently collaborate for the architecture section of the art pubblisher Skira, and his work have been featurated in Abitare magazine , Dwell mag, Domus, Io Donna and Courrier International. In 2007 he is the winner of the grant Pesaresi\Contrasto with the project OFF CHINA. He is the author of Soleri Town a book about the utopian architecture of Paolo Soleri in 2009 he was selected in the exhibition the Joy at the Rome photo festival with “Waterfront”. In 2010 his project route 106 was exhibited in the Biennale of Architecture in Venice. In 2011 he partecipated to the exhibition Sao Paulo Calling with project Slum Insider on the Slum of Mathare in Nairobi. He is currently a member of the Agency Luzphoto.
